An unpredictable world: Charting the right course and our shared potential
Tuesday, February 10, 2026
Hosts: Ministers for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard and Elina Valtonen
Stifts in global power relations are reshaping the geoeconomic landscape. Intensifying competition, especially in the economic and technological spheres, has created a situation in which narrowly defined national interests increasingly drive trade and industrial policy, rather than confidence in broad economic cooperation conducted within a multilateral, rules-based, and relatively predictable framework. Economic interdependencies that were once regarded as strengths are now increasingly viewed as vulnerabilities.
For export-dependent countries such as Finland and Sweden, however, economic prosperity will continue to rely on our ability to engage in trade and remain integrated into international value chains. What strategic choices should Finland and Sweden now make?
How can we best influence the emerging geoeconomic order to strengthen free trade, fair market-based competition, and the strategic competitiveness of the Nordic region and Europe? What can we do together bilaterally and with like-minded partners? In which areas is the potential for bilateral cooperation the greatest?
