Friendship and Rivalry: Swedish-Finnish relations 1917-2025

The relationship between Sweden and Finland has been described as a brotherhood as well as a rivalry. But despite its challenges, the relationship is unique and today the countries are closer than ever since the Finnish war 1808-1809.

However, today's sibling bond has not emerged without some ups and downs. In this year's National Day seminar, historians will examine Swedish-Finnish relations through the transformative events of the 20th century. How did for example the Åland Islands dispute or World War II affect the relationship of the two countries?

Read more about the programme in Swedish here.

Attendees can enjoy lunch at their own expense at Restaurant PLATS from 12:00 to 13:00 (25€, binding pre-booking and payment required by May 28 when registering).

The seminar is organized by Hanaholmen in collaboration with the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation.
