Resilient Futures

The event is a part of our programme series called Dialogues for Our Futures. This series consists of twelve forward-looking dialogues, developed in collaboration with several partners. Our partners have contributed with ideas, and we have together identified key themes that are important for Swedish-Finnish cooperation. The programme series is arranged during Hanaholmen’s anniversary year and celebrates 50 years of meetings and discussions.

How can we build within planetary boundaries?

The environmental impact of construction is significant: the industry generates 40% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, and natural resources are used extensively to create new buildings. At the same time, the demolition of old buildings increases the amount of waste.

Renovation and utilization of the existing building stock are ways to reduce environmental impact and extend the life cycle of buildings. Therefore, they should be seen as a resilient resource to meet the planetary boundaries.

What role does the built environment play in strengthening the overall resilience of society?

What kind of changes in attitudes and decision making are required to make the built environment compatible within planetary boundaries?

What potential does renovation have for ecological and cultural sustainability?
