Sustainability
Hanaholmen’s sustainability work covers all operations, including the responsible use of financial resources, the well-being of personnel and running as environmentally friendly hotel, restaurant and programme operations as possible.
Hanaholmen’s operations are characterised by joy, sustainability and trust, and these values guide us in our sustainability work as well.
Environmental responsibility
Our environmental work is based on awareness of the environmental impacts of our operations and active efforts to reduce them. The EcoCompass environmental system is an important tool in this work. With the help of EcoCompass, we have identified the key goals for our environmental work and have drawn up an action plan. Our future development projects include further reducing the amount of wasted food.
Environmental responsibility in everyday life at Hanaholmen
We reduce energy and water consumption through various saving measures. During the summer months, Hanaholmen’s 65 solar panels produce approximately 15% of the energy needed in the building.
We minimise the amount of generated waste by focusing particularly on reducing food waste in cooperation with customers.
We focus on local produce and locally produced raw materials in all sourcing. We aim to increase the number of responsibly sourced purchases, in particular by increasing the proportion of organic products in the restaurant. Hanaholmen’s restaurant PLATS has its very own fisherman who not only catches fresh fish from nearby waters, but also supplies the kitchen with mushrooms, berries and herbs from nearby forests.
We take care of biodiversity of Hanaholmen's courtyard, for example by increasing the number of flowers preferred by pollinators.
We develop ways to involve our visitors and customers in reducing our carbon footprint, for example by informing hotel guests about the various ways available to contribute to sustainability efforts.
We provide training for our personnel in environmental matters.
Sustainable Travel Finland and EcoCompass
Hanaholmen has been awarded Visit Finland's Sustainable Travel Finland certificate in recognition of our valuable and long-term commitment and efforts to promote sustainable tourism. Sustainable Travel Finland is a nationwide sustainable tourism programme developed by Visit Finland, in which the ecological, sociocultural and economic dimensions of sustainability are taken into account for eligible new participants.
Hanaholmen has also been granted the EcoCompass certificate, which is an acknowledgement of our highly effective management of environmental matters.
With EcoCompass and Sustainable Travel Finland, we are also committed to developing and improving our environmental work.
Social responsibility
Hanaholmen’s operating model is based on creating events and encounters, and our activities are based on creating added value for cooperation between Finland and Sweden, and promoting societal development.
Encounters are also the cornerstone of our business, and our aim is that everyone working at Hanaholmen or visiting Hanaholmen can feel welcome.
We are aware of the fact that our work with social responsibility is a continuous process and requires regular development and review.
Social responsibility in everyday life at Hanaholmen
Hanaholmen’s facilities are open to all, and we encourage everyone to explore the art and history of the building.
Our personnel are committed to treating all customers equally and we expect the same from our customers and other visitors. We train our personnel in equality and diversity issues and we have a regularly updated equality plan and action plan for use in case of inappropriate behaviour.
We offer facilities that are well-suited to visitors with limited mobility and functional capacity.
Hanaholmen’s ethical guidelines guide our own operations and the same ethical requirements apply to our service providers and partners.
Employees are Hanaholmen’s most important asset, and by investing in well-being at work, we aim to pass on the joy of our community to our visitors.
We Speak Gay
As part of Hanaholmen’s social responsibility work, we have been part of the WeSpeak Gay community since 2022. As a member of the WeSpeak Gay community, we are committed to promoting rainbow inclusion both among our visitors and the work community. This is achieved through communication, training and info spots.
Our aim is to be a safe and inclusive meeting place for as many people as possible, and to make Hanaholmen a place where everyone can come as they are.
Accessibility of the building
Most of Hanaholmen’s public facilities are well-suited to visitors with reduced mobility. The main entrance with a car ramp and automatic doors provides accessible entry. There is free access to all floors by lift, and the wide corridors make it easy to move around in public areas.
Our auditorium and conference halls are accessible and the thresholds to our smaller meeting rooms are low. The second floor of our auditorium is accessible by lift, and a ramp to the first floor is available by request for speakers.
There is an accessible toilet on the first floor. Guide and service dogs are welcome to Hanaholmen!
Hotel rooms
Our hotel offers four accessible rooms. All of these rooms have two separate motorised beds and bathrooms with an alarm button. A shower chair is also available by request. In addition, one of our rooms has beds below the standard height. The light switches in all our hotel rooms can be reached from wheelchair height.

Financial responsibility
Hanaholmen is a non-profit organisation with a diverse funding base. Any surplus from our business-driven restaurant, conference and hotel operations is used to support programme activities and the development and promotion of general activities. The funding model is diverse and sets high standards for the ethical guidelines of the management and employees.
Financial responsibility in everyday life at Hanaholmen
We have drawn up ethical principles for our operations, which provide the guidelines for the organisation’s operations and specify ethical, social and economic requirements and expectations.
We act to prevent bribery and corruption. For example, we do not accept expensive gifts or services from suppliers or other business partners.
Our employees are familiar with the company’s values and know how to implement and observe them in practice.
