Will civil society still exist in 2075?

The event is a part of our programme series called Dialogues for Our Futures. This series consists of twelve forward-looking dialogues, developed in collaboration with several partners. Our partners have contributed with ideas, and we have together identified key themes that are important for Swedish-Finnish cooperation. The programme series is arranged during Hanaholmen’s anniversary year and celebrates 50 years of meetings and discussions.

Civil society has a long history in both Sweden and Finland. Recently, the third sector has struggled with declining memberships, cutbacks and declining engagement. Alongside the traditional actors, new forms of digital activism have emerged in both countries. The so-called fourth sector has enabled rapid mobilizations, meanwhile "clicktivism" can lead to more superficial and fleeting engagement. However, major societal challenges, such as the pandemic and the changing security situation in Europe, have once again shown the importance of civil society in terms of a society's resilience. Sweden and Finland are struggling with the same challenges. How can we benefit from both old and new forms of engagement and what can we learn from each other? Do the solutions look the same on both sides of the Baltic Sea? How should our societies change so that civil society can survive?
